Competition 2

Don't forget to enter the competition as read out on show 11 and you could be the lucky recipient of a copy of Condorman or El Topo (both discs are region 2).

Jakubisko at the BFI

Interesting transcript from the BFI Features archive when Jakubisko was interviewed by Peter Hames.  There's obviously more to this man than Perinbaba.

Jakubisko interview.

Midnight Video Past to the Present

Jules Dassin's film Phaedra united Anthony Perkins of North Sea Hijack from our debut show with Melina Mercouri who we have recently covered on show 11.

These Are Your Lives

The 1957 episode of This is Your Life with horror stalwart Boris Karloff who I was amazed to find out was born in Dulwich, London, near Jim's home and my place of work!

When Pete did Larry

The inimitable Peter Ustinov shared the screen with Laurence Olivier on Kubrick's Spartacus and this was obviously the perfect chance for the skilled imitator to brush up on his impression of the thesp.

Midnight Video 11

So, Glastonbury festival is under way and as people wallow in the mud watching the likes of Bono and his backing band or B'ouncy all the clever people are in the comfort of their homes either watching films, wondering what films to watch or downloading Midnight Video 11.

The show heads east first of all for a Slovakian interpretation of a Brothers Grimm tale with Perinbaba, then we go due south and drop in on a Turkish museum in Topkapi before we do a 180 and go north to Edinburgh where two horror titans face each other for a final time in The Body Snatcher.

Right click the post's title to download or click on the archive link to the right of the page.  But I hear all the cool kids subscribe to us through iTunes.

And don't forget to keep checking the blog and our Facebook page for supplemental material.

The A to Z of Film through Midnight Video

In a bid to get you the listeners a bit more involved in the show, Jim and I have had the following idea:

Instead of a question of the week we thought we'd have you guys help us create an unofficial directory of film through the show.
So starting at the beginning of the alphabet we would like you to email, tweet (use hashtag #azmv) or comment on our Facebook page (or here on the blog) what 'A' is important to you within the realm of film.
It can be anything from a movie to a director, actor, editor, composer, piece of dialogue, location - anything really as long as it begins with the nominated letter of that week and relates to cinema - cos that's what it's all about.  And of course the more creative, obscure and tenuous the better.

We're recording shows 12 and 13 this coming Saturday so it would be great to get the ball rolling now so that we can get some feedback read out for show 12.

So thinking caps on and think; film + A =???

Remembering Freddie

Intriguingly The Times was the only newspaper who made any mention of Francis's Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly in the late great cinematographer's obituary.  It just shows how films can be 'lost'.

Grand Designs for Neo Tokyo

Below is an interview (in four parts) with Katsuhiro Otomo, creator of Akira, Steamboy and presenter/writer and shared director of Memories.
The interview is from the Laser Disc release of Akira and is obviosuly Akiracentric, but it's a fascinating insight into the process of how one of the most iconic mangas and animes came into existence.

Curtis Hanson Interview

Below is a link to the only interview I could find where the interviewer discusses Hanson's work on The Silent Partner, it then leads into his later projects, but it's a fascinating read nevertheless.

Art from the films of Midnight Video 10

Competition

We just wanted to confirm that the DVD prizes up for grabs in show 10 are region 2 DVDs and will only play on region 2 or multi region players.
And just to make it clear there is only one copy of each DVD: The Silent Flute and A Woman Called Abe Sada so the two names we pull out of the hat on show 12 will receive one or the other.

Midnight Video 10

It's Friday, so unwrap your Crunchie bar and ingest some of that 'end of the week' feeling.  We thought it would be a little treat to have the show out a little bit early for those who are homeward bound (or already at home).  So why not wrap your ears round the first double figure show of Midnight Video.

The depraved upper classes of this green and pleasant land feature in Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly whilst imaginary worlds are drawn into our existence in Memories before a bank robber meets his match in The Silent Partner.

Right click the post's title to download or click on the archive to the right of the page, but as always it's best to keep the doctor away with an apple subscription to iTunes.

Keep coming back to the blog and visit our Facebook page for supplemental material to accompany the show.

High School Reunion

The 2008 Seth Green Film Fest reunited Three O' Clock High director Philip Joanou and star Richard Tyson for a fascinating Q & A.  Fortunately someone filmed this and put it on You Tube for our viewing pleasure (unfortunately it's in 5 segments, but it's definitely worth waiting for each vid to load).  Of particular note is Joanou's anecdotes about working with Tangerine Dream and  Ennio Morricone.

Go on - swear like the Bard.

Whales need Oxygene

It wasn't just the late great Richard Harris who liked to croon.  His Orca co-star Charlotte Rampling even got in on the act and here is a rare glimpse of her stretching her vocal chords for her ex-hubby; the luxuriously maned Jean-Michel Jarre:

Midnight Video 9

The weekend has landed and so has another instalment of Midnight Video.  Time is of the essence.

The squeaky halls and whispering school yards of the 80s are explored as we try to avoid a beating in Three O' Clock High before donning our armour and shining our soliloquies for Chimes at Midnight.  And then we take to the high seas and try not to blubber in Orca: Killer Whale.

You know the drill.  Right click the post's title or go to the archive to download the show, but by far the easiest route is through the apple of iTunes.

Don't forget to keep checking the blog and our Facebook for supplemental material to accompany show 9.

Tony O' Dell: He's a winner

Chopping Mall was simply another side of Tony we didn't know about:

Crank it up Ginger Geezer

Below are three videos that make up the Crank docubituary that was done by the BBC when Stanshall died in 1995.

Midnight Video 8

Going shopping this weekend?  Kicking back at the manor with a drink or two perhaps? Or maybe just going on a very, very long walk?
Well, Midnight Video is more than happy to accompany you with our eighth show.

We try to avoid the psychotic sentinels at the Chopping Mall, join in the revelry with Sir Henry at Rawlinson End and round off with a snowy hike over the mountains in Cut-Throats Nine.

If you don't already subscribe to the podcast through itunes then go do it, otherwise right click on the post's title to download or click on the 'podcast library' on the left of the blog page.

And don't forget to keep checking our Facebook page (where you can 'like' us) and the blog for nifty little extras to accompany the current show.
